Rescue Recess Letter to the Editor New York Times, December 21, 2007 To the Editor:
The sad truth of “School Recess Gets Gentler, and the Adults Are Dismayed” (news article, Dec. 14) is that efforts to protect children from every risk have serious, unintended consequences for their health and well-being.
How can children grow up capable of making common-sense choices for themselves, about work, life and play, when their role models and guardians seek to regulate their every move?
While we may have outgrown the one-room schoolhouse, we should never outgrow the freedom to play.
